We’ll admit it. We’re tech-heads.

A raw Raspberry Pi 3 B+

If we can connect it to this, then to that, just to make it do this? Yep. Guilty.

When we came across the Raspberry Pi, curiosity not only killed the cat, it buried it and played a dirge. For about $40USD, you too can own one of the worlds most versatile assets a company can own. It’s not just a geek toy for nerds, it has real-world applications with real-life uses. Of course, there are people using the Pi for everything from controlling robots to rerouting their network traffic through ad blockers and VPN Tunnels.

However, not being a robotics engineer, I found a few practical uses for the credit-card sized computer.  In fact, I own three now. They tend to circle around for different uses as I need them, but the uses are plentiful. Currently as I write this, we have implemented:

  • A full-fledged motion-based DVR security system for the studio
  • A vertical wall “task board” for the production team
  • A digital signage screen that pulls news, weather and photos from our albums
  • A personal desktop computer that automates our backups
  • A DAKBoard (an informational slider) that pulls dynamic content from the Internet.
  • … and so much more.

The Pi inherently runs on Linux distrubutions, but with the advent of Windows CE, Windows IOT and Windows-To-Go, You’ll see the next generation of the Pi running your familiar operating system.

So be careful! Once you buy one, you’ll want more.
