Project Challenge:
Extended Outdoor Time Lapse for B-Roll & Marketing Videos
Bogy Construction presented an interesting challenge for CaddisArt, Inc. The idea was to create a time lapse video of an extended period of over 180 days during the construction of a home in Princeton, NJ. The setup needed to be outdoors and would have to be completely waterproof during the entire duration of the video. Since most of the construction will be during the warm days of summer, the enclosure had to be cooled (to prevent the camera from overheating) and work non-stop during the project.

A Sample of the End Result
The “Bogy Box” takes one high resolution photo every minute. This results in 1,440 images for each day the camera is active. Over a 180 day period, the end result is a contiguous and chronological series of images totalling 259,200 images. The resulting images from each day are then imported into our video editing software, reducing the timeline and creating an “optical flow” blend mode to produce samples like this:
Introducing the “Bogy Box”
Due to the challenges of weather, heat and contiguousness, a special build for this time lapse project was needed. This box, constructed by the team at CaddisArt has proven to be resilient and reliable.
Version 1 of the bogy box worked very well until the warmer months were upon us. Once the weather reached over 75 degrees (F), the camera overheated and had to be replaced.

We then created a second enclosure with fans and airflow as seen here. We also changed to color to white to reflect and not absorb sunlight, further cooling the box. The airflow rises through the left corner PVC inlet and pushes the hot air out of the right side as seen in these photos.
